20 years ago the first Thrive Training ran as an experiment to see if relational skills could be passed on from one adult to another. The dream was to see greater transformation in lives and communities, and the results were better than we could have imagined! God has brought us from humble beginnings to seeing the fruit of people changed by the skills AND exponential impact as these individuals have spread the skills in their spheres of influence.

Stories from our community

As we come to this milestone in our Premier Training ministry, we have experienced thousands of lives changed first hand to become more relational. We gathered testimonies from past participants to share with you. We love to see the ripple effects in their lives and the lives of those around them.

Hover to pause and read testimonies and watch videos below from past participants, releasing once a week through November.

The dearest relationships I have used and taught the skills to are some of my grandchildren. In different ways each of them needed healing and stability in their lives. Now they know how to quiet, to seek Jesus in “everything,” and to live from their hearts. And they spread the joy they have found and the skills they have learned to those around them.

We are so grateful for the transformation that we have experienced as we have learned the relational skills from Thrive Training. For the past six years or so, Kurt and I have experienced so many life changes and so many challenges, both personally and in ministry. If it hadn't been for the relational skills that we learned and the maturity that we've grown in over the past 11 years, there is no way that we would have survived or been able to live out what God's plan and calling was in our life. We are forever grateful.

I'm really, really thankful to the Thrive community for giving me the opportunity to access the relational skills. To learn it, to practice through the years and now to be able to share with my students at school.

Before I came to Thrive training I was very high energy, anxious, often angry, frustrated and irritable. Over time as I practiced these skills and particularly practiced the skill of quieting, I noticed that people began to say that I was a peaceful presence in their life and this meant the world to me because it was not something that anyone had ever said before. If you love the idea of being able to quiet your big emotions and be a peaceful, calm presence for other people, I sure hope that you'll participate Thrive training.

The skills impacted my life as I learned to walk in joy, quiet, and the Immanuel Lifestyle. Seeing as God sees is a skill I try to use every day, especially when something, or someone, upsetting happens. I wish everyone I know could attend Thrive. I am so glad that now there are online ways to get the skills.

I've been able to use what I've learned with everybody, everywhere I go. In particular, when Covid hit and we all had to isolate and be secluded, I was able to help people return to joy; to understand telling stories that really help us connect and reconnect with God. We have this flow of life-giving processes going on that help us regain our joy when we're suffering. I encourage everybody - get curious. Go find out about it. Do a Thrive track, learn about your identity. Read some books. Joy switch The 19 Skills. There's lots of options to find out more about how this works. All of it is good. All of it will change your life and the lives of everybody around you.

One thing that has been particularly helpful for my wife and I is being able to recognize when our relational circuits are off and then knowing how to deliberately bring them back online. That has changed our lives, blessed our marriage and has blessed every relationship we've been a part of. We are profoundly grateful for knowing about, mastering, and being able to apply that majority skill on a regular basis.

Thrive training History

In 2001 Dr. Jim Wilder and Chris Coursey began thinking about the research that confirmed that relational skills could be learned and passed on between a mother to her child. Up to this point, no one knew if an adult could pass on brain skills to another adult, but using the exhaustive research of Dr. Allan Schore of UCLA (whose work has been cited over 14,000 times in scientific literature), Dr. Daniel Siegel from UCLA and more, Wilder and Coursey went to work.

The THRIVEtoday team designed practical exercises to equip people with relational brain skills and started putting this brain theory into practice. Wilder understood the complex brain theory about joy while Coursey lived in a redemptive community as a pastor, so he could test the exercises with people from the fellowship. Together they put the framework for an event like no other and called it THRIVE Training, the word they felt was the closest to Jesus’ description of the life God offers, mentioned in John 10:10 as, “abundant life.”

In October 2002, in a church in Baldwin, Michigan, we reached our minimum goal of 25 people registered, and we’ve never looked back!

The first THRIVE Training was an unprecedented success. Trainees reported deep transformations and profound healing from the exercises. Many said, “If I knew THRIVE was going to be like this, I would have brought 5 friends with me!” We ran another event the following year and the momentum increased as did the training tracks, from 1 to 4.

With each training the team learned something new so they improved the exercises, sharpened the focus and increased the potency. At the time of this writing there have been over 30 THRIVE Training events with people from all over the United States including Mexico, Canada, Africa, Australia, Brazil, Uraguay, Sweden, Germany, South Korea, New Zealand, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland and more.

Thrive training today

We currently run 2 Thrive Training events in the USA per year.

If you wonder how you can have greater health in your emotions and relationships and desire transformation in these areas, we encourage you to attend a THRIVE Premier Training event.

Being together, in person, makes it much easier to be relational and build skills together! It is always a time full of fun and brain-changing practice that truly impacts how we show up in the world.
