Practice People

As our Practice People Membership is launching, I’m excited to share how I’ve been using the resources in this membership in my everyday life—and to offer a real, practical picture of what it can look like to use it in a way that actually fits real life.

For a long time, I’ve been weaving relational skills into the rhythms of my day or my week. However, last year I hit a place in my life where I realized I needed more capacity. I was feeling squeezed by life, worn out, and distant from God. I knew I would benefit from more intentional skill practice and added structure.

So I started very simply.

I picked a practice time and I set a timer on my phone to remind me. Then I downloaded the app for our learning platform (the Thinkific app) so I could practice on my phone. (We walk you through exactly how to do this inside the membership welcome course.)

Once I was on the app, I chose just two specific skills to focus on – Simple Quiet and Godsight. I’d open those Habit Builder courses and practice exercises from them. Sometimes I spent just 5 minutes, sometimes I spent 15. I just got through whatever I had time for.

That was it. I didn’t try to do everything. I just focused on two skills that felt supportive in that season of my life. Then as time went on, I began practicing additional skills. Some days I’d open the app and ask myself, “What do I need today?” and I’d choose an exercise that addressed that need.

There’s no one “right” way to practice—and that’s one of my favorite things about the Practice People Membership. Because you have access to all the practice courses, you can choose what fits your life, including:

  • Going through one course at a time, exercise by exercise
  • Picking an exercise each day based on what you feel like practicing
  • Doing our Exercise of the Week, which is perfect if you don’t want to decide what to practice. 
  • Practicing for 5 minutes or 20.
  • Practicing once a week or several times a week.

One of the most beautiful gifts of having a practice membership is simply access. Everything you need to practice is there, ready and waiting. This is important because real life happens. Sometimes we get knocked out of our rhythms – this happened to me over the holidays. But when everything we need to get going again is waiting for us, without guilt or stress, it is so much easier to come back to our practice.
